A recent analysis of 1 million diet records from a popular diet coaching app has revealed an interesting shift in eating habits among dieters. The data shows a clear preference for simpler, more manageable food options, particularly bread, over traditional staples like rice. This trend is especially prominent among younger generations, who are prioritizing practicality and functionality in their meals rather than traditional meal structures.

MZ Generation Favors Efficiency and Routine
The app, operated by 365mc—a medical institution specializing in liposuction—has recorded over 1 million diet uploads. The big data team at Hobit analyzed more than 360,000 meals registered between 2022 and May 2024. The results show that bread, including sandwiches, was the most frequently chosen meal during dieting periods. It accounted for 11.15% of all uploads, with 39,842 entries. Other top choices included salads (9.83%), eggs (8.36%), rice (7.23%), and chicken breast (5.39%).
Interestingly, meat, often considered less ideal for dieting, also appeared in the top ranks, with 14,445 cases (4.04%). This suggests that people are not avoiding certain foods entirely but are instead making smarter choices based on their lifestyle needs.
Bread was uploaded approximately 1.5 times more than rice, even though both are carbohydrate sources. The number of bread-related uploads increased significantly from 5,076 in 2022 to 17,205 in the following years, tripling in just three years.
This trend is more pronounced among younger individuals. For example, those in their 20s, representing the MZ generation, had more than twice as much bread as rice (3.11%) compared to rice (1.55%). Similarly, those in their 30s showed a preference for bread (6.52%) over rice (5.21%). However, older generations, such as those in their 40s, still favored rice (6.13%) over bread (5.90%). In the 50s, rice and bread were almost equally consumed, with meat and protein drinks also being popular.
Experts believe this shift reflects a growing emphasis on convenience and efficiency. Bread, with its versatility and ease of preparation, fits well into busy lifestyles. It can be eaten quickly without requiring side dishes or a specific dining environment, making it ideal for people with limited time or space.

Another key finding from the data analysis was the impact of consistent diet tracking on weight loss. Users who regularly uploaded their meals saw greater average weight loss compared to those who did so less frequently.
A study of 480 users who used the app for over a year found that those who uploaded their meals more frequently lost significantly more weight. The group that uploaded almost every day lost an average of 7.12 kg, while those who uploaded less than once every 10 days lost only 5.28 kg. The difference between the highest and lowest groups was as high as 27 kg.
This highlights the importance of accountability and self-monitoring. Sharing meals with others creates a sense of responsibility, encouraging more mindful eating and better adherence to dietary goals.
