Expanding EV Charging with Wawa

American electric vehicle (EV) charging network Ionna has formed a significant partnership with the convenience store and gas station chain Wawa. This collaboration aims to bring 400 kW fast chargers to more EV drivers, enhancing their charging experience while providing additional amenities.

Starting next week, Ionna chargers will be introduced at Wawa stores across the United States. The first installation is scheduled to open near the Daytona Beach International Airport in Florida. Additionally, three more locations are currently under construction in Brandenton, Pensacola, and Orlando, with plans for more sites in the future.

Ionna's expansion includes over 200 operational stalls, with another 400 under construction. The company's goal is to have 30,000 DC fast chargers online in North America by 2030. With the launch of the Ionna Rechargery on West International Speedway Boulevard, the charging operator now has 212 bays live. Another 400 bays are under construction, and a total of 3,064 bays have been contracted.

Wawa, known for its family- and associate-owned model, operates over 1,100 stores across 12 states. The chain is recognized for offering freshly prepared food, beverages, coffee, surcharge-free ATMs, and fuel. The integration of Ionna's 400 kW fast chargers into Wawa locations will provide EV drivers with an added layer of convenience.

The stations built at Wawa stores will feature canopies, allowing drivers to charge their vehicles without exposure to the sun. While the car charges, passengers can enjoy a drink, grab lunch, or use the restroom. This setup contrasts with other fast chargers that are often located in remote areas without overhead protection or nearby facilities.

Rich Makin, Chief Fuel Officer at Wawa, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “With an ongoing commitment to providing our customers with speed and convenience, our new collaboration with Ionna does just that,” he said. “As we continue to expand our EV services, we are thrilled to provide our customers with a one-stop for fresh food, beverages and EV charging!”

Supporting Diverse EV Models

Ionna’s 400 kW fast chargers are designed to accommodate both CCS1- and NACS-equipped vehicles. Each dispenser comes with a Combined Charging System 1 cable and a North American Charging Standard cable, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of vehicles, including the Tesla Model 3 and the GMC Hummer EV. However, there are no CHAdeMO connectors, which means Nissan Leaf owners may need to rely on other operators.

Seth Cutler, CEO of Ionna, highlighted the significance of the partnership with Wawa. “We couldn’t think of a better way to achieve a key milestone than reaching it with Wawa, a host that allows our drivers to charge with ease and in comfort, knowing they’re being well cared for,” he said.

Founded by seven automakers last year, Ionna has since expanded its partnerships to include BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Toyota, and Rivian. This broad support underscores the network's commitment to advancing EV infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for fast, reliable charging solutions.
