A New Perspective on Bali and Beyond

Zoe Rae, the sister of Molly-Mae Hague, made a quick exit from Bali after just 48 hours, choosing to head to Dubai instead. Her decision sparked a wave of reactions from people who have either visited Bali or have an interest in the island.

The 28-year-old fitness influencer had traveled to Indonesia with her husband, Danny, to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. In a recent YouTube vlog, Zoe shared her disappointment with Bali, mentioning that it didn’t meet her expectations for beaches, dining spots, gyms, and coffee shops. Despite staying in a luxurious room at the five-star Radisson Blu hotel, she felt misled by influencers who only showcase the "luxury side" of the destination.

Zoe highlighted Uluwatu, a village on Bali’s southwestern tip, as one of the recommended places to visit. However, her experience was far from positive. She remarked, “If this is one of the better places, I’m not sure what the others are like.” Before wrapping up her vlog, Zoe mentioned that she had done extensive research before the trip. In a controversial statement, she concluded, “I think it is just personal preference, and our preference was that this isn’t for us, and we are making the executive decision to go enjoy our anniversary somewhere we know that we love and can relax and can drink the water.”

Many who have explored Bali and other parts of Indonesia disagree with Zoe's perspective. They emphasize that Bali is a fascinating destination with rich culture, diverse food, and a deep historical background. On YouTube, one viewer described Bali as a “real place, with real culture, real problems and real people.” They noted that it’s not going to be “picture perfect” like Dubai because it’s “not a manufactured concrete jungle made for Instagram and selfies.”

Another commenter echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Bali is a beautiful island, but if you’re used to going to Dubai, then it’s absolutely nothing like that.” They added that there is so much rich culture to discover if you're willing to look for it, embrace it, and step out of your comfort zone. The people, they said, couldn't do enough for visitors.

A different viewer, who honeymooned in Bali, expressed surprise at Zoe's comments. They shared their own experience: “We stayed in a villa in the jungle part of Ubud. The people are so friendly and kind, that’s part of the magic. And sadly, influencers can be a big problem for countries like this.”

Despite the controversy, Intrepid Travel’s Indonesia General Manager and Bali resident, Ravindra Singh Shekhawat, offered his insights. He pointed out that social media often highlights the “highlights” or just one side of a destination. He emphasized that Bali has a lot to offer beyond luxury experiences and its beaches. It's a spiritual place with a mix of traditions and religions. Shekhawat also mentioned the Balinese concept of “menyama braya,” which promotes wisdom through harmony. He stressed the importance of welcoming and sharing culture with travelers.
