A Taste of Ghana at Binkabi Restaurant
Dining in a new and exciting restaurant can be an adventure, especially when it offers a unique cultural experience. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Binkabi Restaurant, a newly opened spot that serves authentic Ghanaian cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant quickly gained attention for its elevated take on traditional dishes, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts.
Binkabi is located in a quiet neighborhood, nestled among the leafy streets of Labone, just next to Cupcake Boutique and behind Bosphorus. The setting is both charming and inviting, offering a blend of contemporary and traditional elements that create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Despite being in a residential area, the restaurant has managed to carve out a space that feels exclusive and refined.
Upon receiving the menu, I was impressed by the simplicity and thoughtfulness of the selections. The dishes are not overly complicated, allowing diners to focus on the flavors and authenticity of each item. The menu features a variety of popular Ghanaian dishes, including oxtail with sautéed sweet potatoes, which I personally found to be incredibly flavorful. The sauce was so rich and well-seasoned that I could easily eat it on its own, without the need for any carbohydrates.
My cousin, who joined me for the meal, was initially hesitant about trying Red-Red – a dish made with fried plantain and beans. However, the chef's preparation transformed the dish into something light and satisfying, making it a perfect choice for a night meal. The balance of flavors and textures was remarkable, and I found myself torn between enjoying my own dish and trying his.
The menu also includes other standout options such as Binkabi Jollof or Gari Foto with beef or fish, braised pilaf with spicy chicken or snapper, smoked salmon, and koobi garden eggs stew. Each dish is accompanied by boiled yams, green plantain, or steamed rice, ensuring a complete and balanced meal.
The interior of the restaurant, while modest in size, is designed to create a comfortable and elegant dining experience. With seating for around 40 people, the space is filled with interesting ethnic art and craft pieces that add a touch of cultural authenticity. The ambiance is soothing and conducive to a relaxed evening, making it ideal for both casual dinners and special occasions.
On the night I visited, the restaurant was relatively quiet, which allowed for a more personalized experience. The waiter was knowledgeable and attentive, providing helpful recommendations and ensuring that our choices were suitable for the evening. This level of service added to the overall enjoyment of the meal.
In addition to the dinner offerings, Binkabi also boasts a popular lunch buffet that has become a signature feature of the restaurant. I plan to return soon to experience this option, as it seems to be a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
To round off the evening, I enjoyed a perfectly blended vir mojito and ended the night with a delicious pancake topped with honey. The combination of great food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere made the visit memorable.
I am already planning to bring friends and family back to Binkabi for another dining experience. The restaurant has successfully captured the essence of Ghanaian cuisine while offering a modern and refined setting. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, and every bite tells a story of culture and flavor.
