A Stint at London's Most Luxurious Hotel: The Savoy Experience

London is known for its iconic landmarks, historic buildings, and world-class hotels. Among these, The Savoy stands out as a symbol of elegance and luxury. Recently, a British woman named Hannah Ricketts, who regularly reviews hotels and attractions on her YouTube channel, shared her experience of staying at this prestigious establishment. What she encountered was not just the high cost of accommodation, but also an eye-opening look at the prices of cocktails served in one of the hotel’s most famous bars.

Hannah, known for her candid reviews, documented her visit to The Savoy, located in Westminster. The hotel is renowned for attracting celebrities, members of royalty, and high society. A stay in one of its Superior Queen Rooms can cost up to £1,100, while a Suite with a view of the River Thames may exceed £2,000. These figures alone are enough to make anyone pause and reconsider their travel budget.

But it wasn’t the room prices that left Hannah stunned—it was the bar menu. The American Bar, situated on the ground floor of The Savoy, offers a range of premium cocktails, each priced from £25 to £30. Hannah chose a 'Turning 18 (Again!)' cocktail for £29, but what caught her attention were the more expensive options. One drink, called '135 Year Celebration,' which marks 135 years of drinks being served at The Savoy, costs £45.

However, it was the vintage cocktail selections that truly surprised her. Some of these drinks, made with rare and aged ingredients, come with price tags that are nothing short of staggering. A sazerac, crafted using vintage spirits, can cost as much as £5,000. Other options include a 'Hanky Panky' at £120, a 'White Lady' at £130, and a 'Daiquiri' made with vintage Bacardi at £100.

The £5,000 sazerac includes a blend of rare and aged components such as 1858 Sazerac de Forge cognac, 1950s Pernod absinthe, and 1900 Peychaud's bitters. According to some sources, the high cost reflects both the historical significance and the scarcity of these ingredients. In her video, Hannah expressed her disbelief, stating, "I'm going to put my foot down, guys - you cannot order that. It's five grand."

This kind of pricing has sparked discussions among guests and online communities. On Reddit, a former guest shared a photo of the Vintage menu, prompting a lively debate. One user commented, "Flavours would be so off... Def. interesting, but not 5k interesting." Another said, "I'd love to try these but I’d also hate to mix those liquors with anything. I’d want an ounce of the vintage spirit and an ounce of the same modern spirit to compare the two."

Some guests have had positive experiences with the vintage cocktails. One wrote, "I tried the vintage negroni there. Worth the splurge once if you’re into spirits and really quite different to a standard negroni," while another said, "I had the Manhattan and I believe a White Lady last time I was there. Delicious."

This isn’t the first time a hotel has faced scrutiny over its pricing. Earlier this year, two guests at The Plaza in New York made a costly mistake while ordering room service. Inspired by a scene from Home Alone 2, they ordered an extravagant ice cream sundae, only to discover it came with a $500 price tag. This incident highlights how luxury can sometimes lead to unexpected and expensive surprises.
